Darkthrone Old Star

Album Review: Darkthrone – Old Star

Darkthrone return with their follow up to Arctic Thunder. Fenriz and Nocturno Culto have been busy at Necrohell 2 Studios working away to create possibly their best album yet. In the build-up to the release, Fenriz stated Old Star would be the bands most 80’s sounding album to date with the focus squarely on the riffs and it doesn’t disappoint.

Production is cleaner than previous albums, but don’t worry, this isn’t a modern super polished sounding album. What you get is a classic sounding album in every sense. Blending black metal with thrash, doom, death metal and whatever other genres you want to throw in the mix, Old Star comes across as an album made by a couple of guys who just love classic metal in whatever style.

Darkthrone may have been around for a long time but they haven’t lost any enthusiasm for music. Old Star sounds fresh and you can hear the love for what they’re doing come through in the songs. Classic riff follows classic riff. My personal favourite is The Hardship Of The Scots. The opening could have easily been taken from an early Iron Maiden album and I mean that in the best possible way. In all honesty, there are too many highlights to start singling them out. It’s an album free from any fillers at all. Fenriz promised riffs and Old Star delivers in epic proportions.

If you love classic metal with a dark edge then you have to check out this album. Darkthrone are already an iconic band and Old Star only adds to their legacy. They aren’t going through the motions and they certainly aren’t out of ideas. Instead, they’re full of enthusiasm and inspiration and actually seem to be improving with age.
