How Do I Get My Music On Spotify And iTunes?

You’ve just created an awesome new track or finished your album, now you want the world to hear it. But how do you get it on Spotify and iTunes? The answer is simpler than you think.

As an independent musician, it’s pretty important to have your music on the main streaming sites such as Spotify and iTunes. These are the sites the majority of people use and trust, so having your music featured on them allows you to reach a huge audience on the platforms they are used to.

But how do you upload your music to them when they don’t allow you to do it through their websites?

You have to use a service like DistroKid. There are a number of different services that will do this for you but when I wanted to upload my own music, DistroKid seemed to be the best choice by far.

It costs $19.99 per year but for that they allow you to upload unlimited singles and albums. Some sites charge more than that just for one album. You also get to keep 100% of your royalties. This is pretty important as streaming royalties are pretty low anyway. The last thing you want to do is use a service who are going to take a cut.

Where does my music appear?

Distrokid deal with all of the major digital music distributors including

  • Spotify
  • iTunes
  • Apple Music
  • Google Play
  • Deezer
  • YouTube Music
  • Pandora
  • iHeartRadio
  • Napster

That’s a pretty extensive list!

They also make it easy to split the royalties between different people if you need to have band members getting paid separately. This might not matter to you but it’s a nice feature to have available.

Once you have signed up it only takes a few minutes to upload a track. It’s just one simple submission form to fill in with the details about the track. Once DistroKid have processed it (usually a couple of hours) they send it to all of the different sites. The time it takes for your music to actually appear on the different sites varies because they all process your music at different speeds but you’ll start appearing on them within days.

The whole thing is very simple and DistroKid take care of collecting the royalties for you from the different sources so you don’t have to worry about the money side of things.

They even make it easy to share your music with people by giving you sharing links and pages such as this one

I’ve been using DistroKid for a while now and I couldn’t be happier. They make the process very easy for any independent musician to get their music onto all the top streaming and download services.
