How Many Guitars Do I Need?

How Many Guitars Do I Need?

It’s an age-old question. Is there such a thing as too many guitars?

I’ll be honest, I find it a tough question to answer. Mainly because I always seem to want another. I’ll be feeling pretty happy with the guitars I have, then I’ll suddenly start visiting guitar websites and looking at different models.

I don’t know why but I always seem to find a reason why I need to buy another guitar. It’s a curse at times. Especially when I can’t really afford a new one or when I don’t have any more space available.

I’m sure many guitarists are happy with just one or two guitars. I’m currently back up to 11. I had a major cull a few years ago but the number has been steadily creeping up again. I’ve added two in the last few weeks.

Here’s the thing though, they all get used. I play each and every one of them and I use them all for different things. I’ve tried to build as varied a collection as possible so I always have a suitable guitar for whatever sound I’m looking for.

If you only play one style of music, or you only use a couple of tones them I can certainly understand how you’d be happy with a small collection. Just one or two would do for me if I only played one style of music. I’m constantly genre hoping though and I like to have the right kind of guitar for the job.

The sound also plays an important role. If I want the bite a Telecaster gives then only a Tele will do. If I want a thick neck pickup tone then I’ll probably reach for my Les Paul. I also find myself playing differently depending on which guitar I’m using. I don’t know how much of that is down to the tone and how much is the feel of the instrument but it’s a real thing. My playing can totally change depending on which guitar I pick up.

So back to the original question, how many guitars do I need?

For me, the answer is as many as I can afford and store safely in my home. I want as many options as possible when it comes to feel and tone. I’m a huge guitar lover and nothing beats the feeling of unboxing a new guitar and playing it for the first time.
