Meet The Makers – Iron Age Guitar Accessories

Just like with guitars, there is a growing trend in the guitar accessories market for people to head towards handmade products instead of mass produced. One name I’ve been seeing coming up time and time again is Iron Age. Alex, the man behind the brand, produces some of the most beautiful guitar picks available along with various other accessories. I was lucky enough to speak to him for the latest Meet The Makers.

1. What are the core values of your brand?

Quality –  As far as picks & knobs go, they are crafted in small batches and then finished individually to order. Craftsmanship comes first before mass production.

Uniqueness – A distinct design is paramount & should fit into the overall Iron Age aesthetic.

Exclusivity – Being a one-person shop, naturally, there is a limit to how many of something can be produced. Some items come as rare one-offs & the more permanent ones still fluctuate in availability. The point is to make each item special & within reach to only those who truly value them.

2. What do you think sets you apart from everyone else?

The overall themes of the Iron Age & medieval era, whether the topics be historically related or based on mythologies. Craftsmanship is also cited by many and especially when pioneering into new and limited pick designs. Iron Age is not for everyone but there is proof of concept in the abundance of positive reviews from enthusiasts and I think that also serves as a standard for the brand.

3. Are there any design features you are especially proud of?

Perhaps the glowing engravings are one of the most notable traits as far as guitar picks go.

4. Where do you see the industry going in the future?

I see a lot of new people jumping into related markets with their own take on things. There’s definitely a lot of ideas being mixed around at this time and I think guitar accessories will continue to expand into many new niches.

5. Is there a guitarist you’d love to work on a new product with?

Traditionally brands in the guitar industry lean more towards endorsement, but it’s not something that’s integral to Iron Age at this time. I have and do collaborate with Charles Caswell of Berried Alive though and we are currently working on the latest version of his signature pick and also a signature kill-switch.
