Quick Questions With Abysmatic

Quick Questions

Dennis Nikov (producer, songwriter) and Hristo Simeonov (guitarist) from Abysmatic.

1. Who inspired you to start playing?

D: Wes Borland (Limp Bizkit), Wayne Static (Static-X), John 5 (Marilyn Manson). I love the idea of using the guitar more as a wall of noise to strengthen the bass line and the groove of the song instead of as a soloing instrument. I also really like adding little clean atmospheric melodies with delays on top of that to create an overall trippy and cinematic vibe.

H: Kirk Hammett (Metallica), Jim Root (Slipknot).

2. Which piece of equipment couldn’t you live without?

D: We’re using a 6-string Ibanez baritone guitar in the studio which has become an integral part of our sound, which is hard and low, but more industrial than metal. In the amp department, we’re using a Mesa Boogie Mark IV amp with a 4×12 Recto Traditional Slant cabinet for that extra fat and bassy sound.

H: Apart from the guitar… probably the cable. 😊

3. What’s your favourite album of the year so far?

D: Definitely Bring Me The Horizon’s “Amo”, The Prodigy’s “No Tourists”, Rammstein’s self-titled album…

H: That would be Bring Me The Horizon’s “Amo”.

4. If you could have a lesson from anyone, alive or dead, who would it be?

D: I’d love to take production advice from Terry Date who produced some of my favourite metal records. He has that huge, lush, super clean sound that also has an almost hip-hop like low-end.

H: I would take surviving lessons from Keith Richards.

5. What is your number one tip for any new player?

D: Play what you like but play every day.

H: Don’t try to be fast, try to be creative.
