Quick Questions With Esteban

UK Desert Funk band Esteban recently released their new album, Jackpot Motel. I caught up with them to ask them the Guitar Noodle Quick Questions.

Quick Questions With Esteban

Ricky Houghton – Bass
1. Who inspired you to start playing?

As a Bass player strangely it was JimI Hendrix. i thought he was the coolest guy ever so i wanted to try and do what he did, but found myself naturally drawn to the bass. My parents had a few Beatles Tapes & Lp’s I had grown up with so the bass lines of Paul McCartney seemed a good place to start. After that i just took in as much bass heavy music as i could from Primus to the Wailers.

2. Which piece of equipment couldn’t you live without?

My Lakland Jo Osborne bass. I have always either played Fenders or Warwick basses. When things started to take off for us musically i was always reading about Lakland basses on bass forums, I cheekily emailed them and managed to get one from them directly and it hasnt left my side since. Its been faultless on tour going from cold van to hot venue again and again and just always manages to stay in tune. In the studio it just sits nicely in the mix. No bells or whistles, just a really solid Jazz bass. The bass is about 16 years old now and to me sounds better than ever.

3. What’s your favourite album of the year so far?

In search of lost time by Proteje … He’s always been one of the nearly men of modern reggae, a few good tunes, this album just hits the spot, spirituality, big beats and good vibes.

4. If you could have a lesson from anyone, alive or dead, who would it be?

Bootsy Collins – Nobody has better feel than Boosty… Whether its in a hip hop sample, JB record or P Funk you cant help but dance to Bootsy

5. What is your number one tip for any new player?

Just live, breathe and eat music, soak up as much different music as you can. As a bass player work on developing the rhythm section of your band, listen to how guys like Bonham and John Paul John, or Sly and Robbie play

Liam Ryan – Guitar
1. Who inspired you to start playing?

The early 90s had such a massive influence on me. It was a great time for guitar-based music and it felt like there were many cool cultural shifts happening musically. I just remember an endless stream of new music at the time and so many influential bands/artists to be discovered (new and old). However, it was John Frusciante’s playing style on the album Blood Sugar Sex Magic that had the biggest impact on me.

2. Which piece of equipment couldn’t you live without?

It’s probably a bit too obvious to choose a guitar… and it would be very easy for me to choose my PRS that has played hundreds of gigs and never let me down… but it’s an acoustic guitar that I truly couldn’t live without. Pretty much everything I create musically follows the same process; curled up on the sofa with an acoustic guitar where I can truly lose myself!

3. What’s your favourite album of the year so far?

Honestly, I’ve not really listened to a lot of new stuff recently. Although, I’m enjoying The New Abnormal by The Strokes. I’m glad those guys are still doing their own thing. There is something authentic and honest about their music which is really refreshing. It’s like they’re too cool to care about what the listener thinks… Which for some reason really appeals to me.

4. If you could have a lesson from anyone, alive or dead, who would it be?

We are so lucky to live in a time where lessons are so accessible online for us guitarists. It’s almost become too easy to expand your musical knowledge. That said, it’s also a time where we can easily be distracted and consumed by ‘stuff’ that gets in the way of progress. So, for me it’s more about finding the right headspace and motivation so I’ll go with Aristotle! But if he’s busy, I’ll have a 1:1 with Jimmy Page please 🙂

5. What is your number one tip for any new player?

Never stop learning, but use your ears first and foremost… and always go with your gut!
