Quick Questions With Glen Thomas

Quick Questions

1. Who inspired you to start playing?

It would be a straight up lie if I didn’t say Metallica got me started with playing and loving Metal as a genre overall.

However, Trivium was the band that propelled me into taking a much deeper interest into guitar and songwriting. They are still my #1 to this day.

2. Which piece of equipment couldn’t you live without?

Well, all of my equipment really. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts. So, to answer this, I couldn’t live without any of the gear I use on a day-to-day basis (including my Solar Guitars, Digitech Drop Pedal, UAD Apollo Twin interface and the Fortin Nameless Suite plug-in.)

3. What’s your favourite album of the year so far?

I’ve been listening to a lot of Periphery’s recent record Hail Stan but I’ve been thoroughly enjoying the off-singles Trivium has been putting out (remake of Pillars Of Serpents, I Don’t Wanna Be Me cover, Drowning in The Sound).

4. If you could have a lesson from anyone, alive or dead, who would it be?

Dead, hands down has to be Dimebag Darrell. I wouldn’t even ask him anything related to guitar; I’d love to sit down and just gain insight to how he sees the metal world and how he sees it evolving.

Alive, actually Keith Merrow/Ola Englund again not for the guitar stuff but to pick their brains about production (from songs to video creation) because those two inspired me greatly to become a content creator in the first place.

5. What is your number one tip for any new player?

God, there’s so many. I think to really narrow it down, is to really just have fun with it.

It’s so easy to get caught up in getting serious about it because we’ve all seen the potential that music can bring to the table (whether its fame, fortune, legacy, etc.) and we all want that and we strive towards it fully with every fiber of our being.

But, you have to remember at the end of the day that we all take interest in music and guitar playing because it’s legitimately fun and fulfils us in a way that most others cannot understand; no matter if it’s tough, no matter if others berate us into quitting, no matter what. So, just enjoy every bit of it and really have fun; you never know what can result from just always having a great time with it.
