Quick Questions With Guitar Noodle

Quick Questions With Guitar Noodle

I’ve been asked to do this a number of times now, so this week’s Quick Questions is with Guitar Noodle. I’ve spoken personally to some of my followers but I realise many of you don’t know who I am. It’s time to change that.

So, who is Guitar Noodle?

My name is Mark Smith and I started playing the guitar around 26 years ago. I was born in England but I currently live in North Wales where I run Guitar Noodle. My biggest musical influences growing up were bands like Metallica, Pantera and Sepultura. I love metal but I also listen to many other genres of music.

Guitar Noodle has become my main musical outlet but I occasionally release the odd track under the name Keep Me Down. I don’t have time to record my own music very often but I’m hoping to work on some more this year.

As far as gear is concerned, you’ve probably noticed I love my Solar guitars. I’m proud to be endorsed by them. The reviews on here were written before I became a Solar artist. I just loved the guitars so much when I tried them that I wanted to be more involved with Solar Guitars. I’m a big fan of digital gear too. I often use my Line 6 Helix but right now my favourite plugins are made by Neural DSP. The quality of them is incredible.

Quick Questions

1. Who inspired you to start playing?

When I started playing I basically wanted to be James Hetfield. I’d been listening to Metallica since Master Of Puppets came out and loved everything else they’d released. When I picked up the guitar sometime around 1992-93 I wanted to learn every Metallica riff I could.

2. Which piece of equipment couldn’t you live without?

It’d have to be my Solar Guitars A1.6ETWHM. It’s my main writing guitar.

3. What’s your favourite album of the year so far?

It’s a tough choice. I love Master Of The Universe by Ola Englund, Wide Eyes In The Dark by Nick Johnston and The Valley by Whitechapel so any one of those depending on my mood.

4. If you could have a lesson from anyone, alive or dead, who would it be?

Nick Johnston or Plini. Some of the stuff those guys do is incredible. I’m slightly obsessed with them at the moment.

5. What is your number one tip for any new player?

Have fun. Making music is supposed to be fun so make sure you enjoy it.
