Quick Questions With InVase

Quick Questions With InVase

InVase is the solo project masterminded by Ian Shuirr. Ian used to play drums for a band called Straight Line Stitch but stopped when he found out his wife was pregnant.  So, also being a guitar player, he started teaching himself how to record and InVase was born. I recently caught up with him to ask him the Guitar Noodle Quick Questions and talk about the gear he used on some of his tracks.

Quick Questions

1. Who inspired you to start playing?

I started Playing guitar at around age 14 and it was definitely my dad who is just a badass (plays guitar left handed but strung right handed) and Daniel Johns from Silverchair.  Still fascinated by that guy to this day.  Also, my friend that I met my freshman year in high school and who I spent many years in a band with, Andy Grimm.  He was so good and made me want to play guitar more.  But when I first started on guitar he was a big deal for me because I was always around him and looked up to him.  But then also a lot of the Nu Metal bands like Nothingface and Sevendust, Korn, Deftones.  Even some Hardcore bands like Earth Crisis and Vision Of Disorder and Candiria and of course it goes without saying…..Dimebag.   But a lot of it was also local stuff in our small town.  Grit and Knee Deep.  We’d all play local shows together and there was a friendly and healthy competition between us and we had a lot of good times and there was so much talent and a lot of people to be inspired by.  Good times.

2. Which piece of equipment couldn’t you live without?

I have 12 guitars and I love them all so much but if I had to pick one…..well I couldn’t haha. I’d have to say it’s a tie between my purple PRS CE 22 that just plays and feels so good and my LTD MH250NT that I’ve written and recorded so much with.  A couple years ago I gutted it and had all new pickups (Seymour Duncan JB/Jazz) put in it and my homie Richard who runs Airis Effects sent me a Paper Oil (I think that’s what it’s called) cap to put in there and just put in all new electronics and it’s just an awesome guitar even though it’s a lower level LTD.  But then there are 2 guitars that were gifts that I love so much as well.  My wife got me an Agile Septor 828 8 string (also purple with a maple neck) and my dude Tim Chappell who was in Straight Line Stitch with me gave me a really sweet and beat up LTD baritone after breaking my first LTD MH250NT on stage.  Sorry not the shortest answer but hopefully some insight 🙂 So basically, if there was a fire…… I’m grabbing all kinds of stuff!!!!!

3. What’s your favourite album of the year so far?

So far, my homies that used to be called Know Lyfe and are now called Heartsick just put out an album called Sleep Cycles and it’s fantastic.  Really digging on that.  Looking forward to that new Periphery though too……and Ola Englund…….and Devin Townsend lol

4. If you could have a lesson from anyone, alive or dead, who would it be?

Drew Goddard.  One of the guitar players from Karnivool.  My favorite band ever.  So good.  He just seems like a rad guy and I love his style.  Very dynamic and unique.

5. What is your number one tip for any new player?

Be unique.  Obviously, there is a phase in the beginning where you are just learning other people’s stuff but always try to find your own sound and…..play with passion.
