Keep Up Interview

Quick Questions

1. Who inspired you to start playing?

(DJ) My entire family is very musically talented and at a young age, I wanted an electric guitar. My mother said that she would not buy me an electric guitar unless I learn the fundamentals of chord structure and strumming on her old acoustic. Doing so, allowed me to really understand the basics to develop the skills I have today. Because Keep Up is a band that switches instruments LIVE on stage, it’s important that we all continue to pull inspiration from other artists.

(Chris) I remember listening to classic rock in the car with my mom. Pink Floyd, Creed, or Pearl Jam would be in the cassette player at all times. My parents bought me a guitar and took me to lessons every week. Eventually I took up drums where I continue to think of the entire picture to write.

2. Which piece of equipment couldn’t you live without?

(Ian) I definitely couldn’t live without my computer, since that is how we do all of the tracking for all of our music!

(Chris) Personally, a beer bottle opener. Musically, I couldn’t live without my guitar. It’s my start and end to every song I write. I primarily work with my PRS Mark Holcomb guitar.

3. What’s your favourite album of the year so far?

(DJ) It’s really hard to say which album is my favorite, but the current album I am rocking now that was released in the last 12 months was Celebrity Mansions by Dinosaur Pileup.

(Ian) The year is still very young, but in the last 12 months I Prevail released an amazing album titled Trama.

4. If you could have a lesson from anyone, alive or dead, who would it be?

(Chris) John Lennon hands down. He continues to be such an inspiration to peace and love. That’s what I strive for.

5. What is your number one tip for any new player?

(Ian) You will 100% have discouraging moments and days, but DO NOT let them get to you. Take a step back and take a break. Then come back to it, with a fresh mind. Confidence is a HUGE factor when playing instruments or singing. Don’t psych yourself out!

(Chris) Keep going. It’ll be difficult but it gets easier with practice. Also using a metronome will dramatically improve your skills by getting used to being on time.
