Quick Questions With Moonshade

Moonshade is a Lusitanian metal band, formed in 2010. With one demo and one EP under their belt – along with a set of live shows that allowed them to share the stage with the likes of Amorphis – the band will release their debut album “Sun Dethroned”, through Art Gates Records in the 26th of October, 2018, in the continued effort to musically redefine the beauty in chaos, death and despair.

Moonshade Interview

Quick Questions

(Pedro Quelhas & Daniel Laureano – Guitars, Moonshade)

1. Who inspired you to start playing?
Pedro: My father. I was born listening to music and seeing him play music, so I was always curious about it.

Daniel: Michael Schenker and Matthias Jabs, of the Scorpions. I remember listenting to Wind of Change for the first time when I was 10 or 11 and thinking: “Damn. You can do THIS with a guitar? I want to do it too!”

2. Which piece of equipment couldn’t you live without?

Daniel: A Guitar, plain and simple. Pedro and I are very different people in that regard: while he loves the technical aspect of making music, I am all about the creative fire that is unleashed when I start putting notes and chords together. After that stage, recording is nothing but a necessary chore.

Pedro: Recording equipment. I also love to compose, but for me, not being able to record what I play would take all the joy out of the process.

3. What’s your favourite album of the year so far?

Daniel: “Death & Flamingos”, by Sopor Aeternus & the Ensemble of Shadows.

Pedro: I would say “Verkligheten” by Soilwork, but there are so many I listened that I loved. It’s always a hard question to answer.

4. If you could have a lesson from anyone, alive or dead, who would it be?

Pedro: Tricky question.. There are so many talented guitar players out there from whom I would learn so much.. Maybe John Petrucci for his incredible technique or Mikael Akerfeldt for being such a genius composer.

Daniel: I’d just have a 5 or 10 minute conversation with the multi-instrumentalist Brendan Perry, from Dead Can Dance. I feel like I would learn so much just from being face to face with him… On the dead-list, David Bowie. Hands down.

5. What is your number one tip for any new player?

Pedro: Do not try to play hard things without mastering the basics. Try to sound good, train your ear and then try slowly to play hard stuff.

Daniel: What he said.
