Quick Questions With Tarah Who?

Tarah Who? Well, “she” equals “they,” and “they’re” a band masterminded by grunge-punk sage Tarah Carpenter, a firebrand frontwoman who channels explosive emotionality into rousing anthems.

Tarah Who? is a power trio in every sense of the phrase, bonded together by telepathic musical interplay and profound interpersonal connections. In addition to Tarah, the three-piece band also features bassist/backing vocalist Joey Southern, and drummer/backing vocalist Coralie Hervé.
Previously, Tarah Who? has released two full-lengths, two EPs, and one single of raw punky rock n’ roll. The band’s output has garnered plaudits and earned feature-story coverage from GIG Radar, Kill The Music, La Grosse Radio, Loud Stuff, Moshville, Music Connection, Muzak, and The Ring Master, among other outlets.

Tarah Who? Interview

1. Who inspired you to start playing?
Joey Southern: The bassist PNut of the band 311. I remember seeing them play when I was a kid and thinking, this is what i want to do!!!

Tarah G. Carpenter: I actually started playing the drums and Bass when I was 14. I love the bass lines of Stevie Wonder’s songs and that is what really got me into bass. Then I moved to KY as an exchange student and I could not play there so I taught myself the guitar with an Alanis Morissette songbook lol!

I started playing the guitar essentially to write songs.

2. Which piece of equipment couldn’t you live without?

JS : At home, Vox AP2BS amPlug 2 Guitar/Bass Headphone Amplifier!!! It allows you to play with headphones and hear all your bass tone!!! Extremely necessary for practicing in an apartment!!!

On stage, I absolutely need my Blackstar U500 and U250ACT!!! This rig is unbelievable.

TGC: My J45 Gibson. I need to play and write. I can’t live without playing. I can’t stand without playing drums, bass or guitar for too long. I get really antsy but since you are asking about one piece of equipment…
Otherwise I would add drumsticks… 🙂
On stage.. my G&L ASAT and my Ernie Ball Not even slinky’s. My guitar HAVE to have this gauge.

3. What’s your favourite album of the year so far?

JS : Still waiting for the new one to drop… until then it is still 10k Days – Tool haha

TGC: Oh that’s hard!! Luckily L7 has just released a new album! Scatter the Rats!

4. If you could have a lesson from anyone, alive or dead, who would it be?

JS : Mike Watt!

TGC: Joan Jett for the life lesson, Anika Nilles for drums.

5. What is your number one tip for any new player?

JS : When learning a new instrument, pick songs you are familiar with to start. You already know the tune and have an advantage.

TGC: My biggest advice and I am adamant about this: BE YOURSELF. The only way to play music that resonates within you, is by playing YOUR WAY. Yes, you can get tips and advice from here and there but don’t forget to be yourself. there is only one of you, don’t play to look like someone or sound like someone. The best way to develop your sound is to play and find what is best for you. What sound good to you, and you might come up with new tricks and technique. BE ORIGINAL and BE YOURSELF.
