The King Of Mars

I caught up with John Bruner (guitar & vocals) and JJ Frale (bass) to ask them the Guitar Noodle Quick Questions. Here’s what they had to say.

Quick Questions

1. Who inspired you to start playing?

John Bruner (guitar) – My biggest early influence on guitar was John Frusciante from Red Hot Chili Peppers. I was completely obsessed with his solos. I learned so many of his riffs when I first started taking guitar lessons. When I saw what he could do with a guitar, I knew I had to learn to do that as well.

JJ Frale (bass) – My inspiration to start was John Entwistle.

2. Which piece of equipment couldn’t you live without?

John Bruner – In my opinion, the most important factor in guitar tone is your pickups. You can have a cheap guitar and amp, but if you have some quality pickups, you can still have a great tone. I bought some Lindy Fralin Stratocaster pickups a few years ago and it changed my sound completely.

JJ Frale – I don’t use many effects, the most important gear for me has always been my fingers.

3. What’s your favorite album of the year so far?

John Bruner – It’s still early in the year, but so far I’ve been a big fan of Deerhunter’s Why Hasn’t Everything Already Disappeared? They’re a great folk, psych, rock band who’ve been at it for a while. This album has been a great soundtrack to my winter so far.

JJ Frale – Louis Cole’s Time is my favorite album in the past year.

4. If you could have a lesson from anyone, alive or dead, who would it be?

John Bruner – I’d love to have a guitar lesson from Jimi Hendrix. His style was unparalleled and I’d love to be able to hear that in person and see what goes through his mind when he plays guitar. I’d also love to have a lesson in songwriting from Kurt Cobain. He was one of the best songwriters ever and getting to pick his brain would be a dream.

JJ Frale – if I could have a lesson with anyone, it would be Joe Zawinul.

5. What is your number one tip for any new player?

John Bruner – For guitar players, learn to read notated music. Learning songs from tabs is always fun, but isn’t going to benefit you in the long run. Learning actual music notation is going to make you such a better player in a lot of different aspects.

JJ Frale – My number one tip for any beginning musician is to practice consistently everyday.
